James Lavadour:
The Properties of Paint

Exhibition Statement

James Lavadour is a nationally recognized Oregon artist who is well known for his exploration of landscape as both inspiration and subject. Throughout his career he has been inspired by the mountainous northeastern Oregon region where he has lived for most of his life. Since 2000, Lavadour has focused intensely on the properties of paint, creating works that he describes as “intersections” between his better-known landscapes and his lesser-known abstract architectural structures. This exhibition examined the conceptual layers underlying Lavadour’s work of the previous 8 years.

Organized by the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University, James Lavadour: The Properties of Paint was supported by an endowment gift from the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, through their Spirit Mountain Community Fund. Additional support was provided by grants from the City of Salem’s Transient Occupancy Tax funds and the Oregon Arts Commission. Many thanks to Crow’s Shadow Institute for their assistance in the loan of work from their collection.
