SOU Art Faculty Biennial

Exhibition Statement

The Schneider Museum of Art presented the Southern Oregon Art Faculty Biennial Exhibition from January 4 – February 26, 2005. A variety of media was represented in the exhibition including sculpture, paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, digital media and ceramics.

During the last faculty exhibition patrons were able to view the partially completed animated video Legends from Camp by Miles Inada that explores the WWII Japanese American Internment Camp experience based on the poetry of his father, Lawson Inada. The film was featured in its entirety in the exhibition. The film was shown at the 2004 Tri-Becca Film Festival in New York, the Ashland Independent Film festival and was awarded the Best Animated Short at the 2004 River Run International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Also, on display was his new comic book Arms and Ether.

Varda Yatom was a visiting ceramic artist from Israel. Her ceramic sculptures and installations are layered with meaning, exploring deeply rooted cultural values and questions about traditions, human behavior and social values. Although her work reflects many of the issues concerning the Israeli situation in 2005, her pieces cross cultural barriers and explore universal themes of marriage, hate, love, fear, family, war, and personal relationships. Her work has been exhibited in Europe, Japan, Israel and the United States.

Other faculty in the exhibition include Robert Alston, Shawn Busse, Cody Bustamante, Jack Coehlo, Jennifer Eufusia, Michael Gantenbein, Don Kay, Betty LaDuke, Erika Leppmann, Lyle Matoush, Jim Romberg, Margaret Sjogren, Tracy Templeton and Fred Vassar.
