Contemporary Animation and Comic Book Art

Exhibition Statement

The Schneider Museum of Art was excited to announce an exhibition of contemporary animation and comic book artists from October 4 – December 15, 2001. Curated by animator and Southern Oregon University Professor Miles Inada, the exhibition showcased artists working independently in mass media to create challenging art that reaches outside the traditional confines of the art world. Selected artists included Lynda Barry, Peter Bagge, Jim Woodring, Paul Glabicki, James Duesing, and Ellie Lee.

This was a unique museum exhibition exploring an emerging area of the visual arts that had little critical attention in 2001. The exhibition featured original drawings, working sketches, printed work, video, and material created for the Internet. The artists’ work-in-progress illustrates the key steps to creating comic and animation art. This show introduced the museum’s audience to exciting and challenging new approaches to these popular media.
