Terry Allen:
Recent Bronzes and Drawings

Exhibition Statement

Terry Allen produced paintings, songs, sculpture, poems, drawings, prints, performances, collages, and down-home stories- all at an extraordinary level of excellence. Terry Allen’s multiple talents were documented in this exhibition of recent bronze sculpture and drawings in 1994. Humor, satire, and pathos combine in Allen’s work to produce thought-provoking insights into the human condition.

Jo Harvey Allen and Terry Allen were among the most well-known and talented multimedia artists working within the world of contemporary art. They have won literally all the major awards and honors for their work in a variety of media. Terry is a painter, sculptor, printmaker, song writer, composer, and musician. Jo Harvey is performance artist, actress, and writer. They are both poets. They brought their talents to the SOSC campus on November 10 with a performance at the SOSC Music Hall and an exhibition at the Schneider Museum of Art.

The performance featured a series of vignettes of Jo Harvey’s performance work entitled “As it is in Texas.” Like the work of many performance artists, Jo Harvey’s work is not easy to define. Using minimal props, her performances can best be described as monologues directed toward the audience that combine humor and deep insights into contemporary society. They are intellectually challenging, emotionally stirring, and always, entertaining. Jo Harvey has had roles in major films such as David Byrne’s True Stories, Fried Green Tomatoes, and The Client.

Jo Harvey’s performance was followed with a musical concert by Terry. He performed original compositions of his songs and music. His musical style combines elements of rhythm and blues with a bit of West Texas country. His songs range in subject from the ironies of the art world to the social complexities of Southwest border towns.
