SOSC Art Faculty

Exhibition Statement

The late Will Martin, a prominent Portland architect, was commissioned in 1984 to design the Schneider Museum of Art on the campus of Southern Oregon State College. As Will Martin was completing his plans for the museum, he was asked to expand his ideas for a site study for a new visual arts complex to house the new SOSC Art Dept.

The college has been officially designated by the State Board of Higher Education to emphasize the fine and performing arts. A Visual Arts Complex was an integral part of the long-range plan to fulfill this mandate.

To provide a focus and generate community interest in this project, silkscreened prints of Martin’s rendering were sent to members of the SOSC art faculty at to other southern Oregon artists. Along with the interpretive renderings, the artists submitted two additional pieces of their recent work for this exhibition.

The participants in the show were Robert Alston, Eugene Bennett, Cody Bustamante, Kay Campbell, Robert Devoe, Judy Howard, Carl Jackson, Robert Johnson, Will Martin, Lyle Matoush, Jim Romberg, Margaret Sjogren, Ron Sommers, Nan Trout, and the SOSC Publications Department. Their diverse styles and modes of expression were the focus of this exhibition. They were the keystone to the vital art community in Southern Oregon.
