Fiber Directions:
West Coast

Exhibition Statement

Fiber art, fabric weaving, surface design, fabric media, textile art-call it what you will, “Fiber Directions: West Coast” was a strong representation of fiber works being produced on the West Coast.

The exhibition showcased nationally and internationally acclaimed artists working in fiber who pursued diverse ideas and uses of the media. Each of the 14 artists was selected on the basis of his or her artistic accomplishments. The artwork exhibited demonstrated the innovation and commitment these artists brought to their work.

The purpose of the exhibition was threefold: first, to illustrate the broad context and cross-media approach in the various techniques of the fiber medium; second, to stimulate an interest in the medium by exposure to work of the highest quality; and third, to expand our museum audience’s awareness and appreciation of the fiber medium.

The exhibition included examples of sculpture, installation, felting, handmade paper, casting, twining, weaving, interlacing, wrapping, assemblage, and environmental works. The show’s ambition was to introduce a new vision, vitality, and language to our perception of the visual arts and for viewers to hopefully find the artwork to be provocative, inspiring, amusing, and an informative index of contemporary fiber art.
