Exhibition Statement as Written

The work of Ashland artist Robert Devoe was quickly gaining national acclaim. This exhibition was composed of 17 paintings, most of which were completed during the previous year. Each painting represents strands of interest he had been developing during the previous several years. These interests included his well-known watercolors of highly finished still lifes rendered in a photo-realist technique, a new group of realist still lifes rendered in soft pastel, and interior scenes with figures done in soft pastel or oil pastel in an impressionistic style.

The show featured work demonstrating some new technical experiments and innovations for Devoe. For example, several still lifes were rendered partly with acrylic paints used in a watercolor style. The advantage of using acrylics is that color washes can be layered over one another in a manner not possible solely with watercolors. This offers Devoe alternatives with his technique without any notable differences in his finished work of art.

The large ocean painting in this show is a new departure for the artist. It was his first seascape and depicts the coastline of Yachats, Oregon with rocks and churning surf. Acrylics with a dry brush technique were used in this painting.

The paintings in this exhibition were on loan from the artist, the artist’s wife, and the Gail Severn Gallery in Sun Valley, Idaho.
