Oregon Biennial
Exhibition Statement
The Oregon Biennial is a major showcase for the arts in the state. The exhibition featured artists from throughout Oregon working in a variety of styles and media.
This exhibition presented by the Portland Museum of Art was based on a competition held every 2 years since 1981. It is the major statewide showcase for artists working in Oregon or in communities adjacent to Portland on the north bank of the Columbia River. Though open to all artists in all media except film and video, fewer of the most established artists had been attracted in recent years. In this show, therefore, the emphasis was on the younger artist, and most of the pieces were two dimensional perhaps because the selection process tended to favor the 2-dimensional work over the 3-dimensional.
The show was juried by James T. Demetrion, Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. In making his selections, Demetrion viewed more than 1,000 slides submitted by 420 artists. He finally chose 93 works by 88 artists. 40% of the artists live in 18 communities outside of Portland, and the show reflected the diversity of Oregon art at the time.
