Harmonie Universelle
Four Continents of Musical
Instruments from the
SOU’s Schuman Collection

Exhibition Statement

The Fall 2009 show featured two collections owned and cared for by Southern Oregon University. These resources are utilized for research, study and examination by classes and individuals. Each collection adds to the legacy and cultural riches of the university and community.

Harmonie Universelle: Four Continents of Musical Instruments from SOU’s Schuman Collection offered two hundred rare and historical musical devices that cut across time and cultures, revealing and invigorating our understanding of the central role of aesthetic-experience in the history of mankind. Assembled by Mr. Jack Schuman of Phoenix, OR, the collection numbers more than 700 items.

Schuman is a Renaissance man-librarian, art historian, writer, photographer and world traveler. He made his first purchase of instruments in 1952, and he continues his activity to this day, in fact, one of the items on display was acquired just a week before the show opened.
